Who Needs…or Wants….”Boring?”

variety is the spice of life‘Variety is the spice of life. ‘ You’ve heard it a zillion times, I’m sure, but it’s a saying worth repeating, especially to those of us who are working at losing weight or at weight-management.

My questions to you: Are you including a variety of foods in your diet? Are you experimenting with different types of food, meals and snacks?I promise you that a lack of variety in the foods that you eat can bring your weight-loss efforts to a screeching halt. I’ve seen it happen too many times to keep track of. Not only that, your body requires different types of nutrients and the number one source for these comes from the foods we eat.

Let’s face it,  If what you’re eating doesn’t keep you interested, you’re bound to become bored with your weight-loss efforts and wave the surrender flag. It’s an easy fix. You simply have to drop  the “same-old, same-old, day-in and day-out, eat the same things over-and-over again” syndrome.

Add some variety and excitement to your eating plan! Spice it up, shake it up, try new things! Put 5 new healthier choices in your grocery cart each week. Be a rebel!

Sometimes are biggest mistake is our mid-day meal, lunch. While there’s nothing (nutritionally) wrong with putting a slice of turkey breast and a dab of mustard between 2 pieces of reduced-calorie wheat bread, is this a meal that you would look forward to? Personally, I wouldn’t be too excited about it, especially if I made it my typical lunch. But by adding some variety, you can come up with a sandwich that’s tasty and healthful and one that will really satisfy your palate as well as your stomach.

For instance, take a slice (or two) of any lean luncheon meat (3g fat or less per 3 ounces). Roast beef, chicken, ham–the choice is yours’, all yours’! Place the meat in a Light Sundried Tomato Flatout bread. Add some fresh, chopped lettuce, red onions and ripe tomatoes. Don’t stop there, though. Add some roasted red peppers (from water-packed jars), bottled sweet and hot peppers, artichoke hearts, red-onion slices, shredded carrots, cucumber slices, maybe even some fresh basil, baby spinach and watercress leaves, fresh baby spinach leaves, shredded carrots, and even cucumber slices…any types of vegetables that you like. Spread 2 teaspoons of Walden Farms Chipotle Ranch or a measured amount of flavored oil.  Fustini’s oils are my fave…so many flavored EVOOs and vinegars to choose from. (Personally, I would add their Picholine oil on this sandwich.) Roll up the sandwich and enjoy or place in a broiler or toaster oven for a toasted meal.

As delectable as the sandwich I described above may be, don’t make the mistake on OD’ing on the same thing the next day. Try something totally different. How does a Portabella mushroom burger sound? Bulk it up with some of your favorite vegetable Power Foods. Now, what should you put the burger between, a fresh whole wheat bun or  an English muffin? You get the idea!

The point is: make your already-good decisions better and tastier by using your creativity! These are just a few ideas  but the options are endless! Don’t limit yourself or paint yourself in a corner. Be daring, be creative, be fun.

Here’s to a healthier, happier us!
