Thinking of weight loss as a ‘challenge’ may make it more difficult to achieve success, but what if you replaced the word ‘challenge’ with ‘adventure’? One word changes everything, doesn’t it? And weight loss IS an adventure–a wonderful one at that!
Developing healthier lifestyle habits that will lead to you maintaing a healthier weight is exciting business. Think about it: You gain control over food, rather than the other way around, you get to come out of your comfort zone and try new meals and forms of exercise, you get to feel so good about your accomplishments along the way–everything from having more energy to being able to wear new clothes and looking darn good in them!
Instead of thinking about weight loss as a challenge, tackle it as you do any new venture in life. When you set out to accomplish something, whether it’s planning for a vacation or wedding while on a budget, or taking on a new project at work, home or school, there are steps to take and consider, and as always…taking the right steps and having the right attitude leads to the desired outcome. Weight loss is no different.
To be successful at getting yourself to a healthy weight, go into it with a positive, “I got this!” attitude. Don’t wiggle your toes in the water, dive in! You need that initial jump to get your momentum going. This is not the time to procrastinate or to make excuses as to why something can’t be done.
Once you dive-in, set all kinds of smaller, personal goals that will get you to your final goal. Achieving something just doesn’t come with a click of your fingers or a wish. Remind yourself frequently why you’re taking these changes on so you don’t get lost in the process. Why are you filling up your grocery cart with healthier food choices? Why did you set the alarm clock early so you can get in some exercise? Why are you taking the time to learn about yourself and the person you want to be? Know why you are you making these changes? Feel it. Visualize it. You’re doing it because you’ll feel better about yourself inside and out! You’re doing it because you’re so done with being overweight and feeling defeated about it. One of my favorite classic movies is “Fried Green Tomatoes.” If you’ve seen it, mimic “Towanda.” Nothing could stop Kathleen Bates when she took on her Towanda persona. Be a Towanda!
On your weight loss adventure, don’t be afraid to prioritize and to be flexible. No matter how committed you may be to your mini-goals, there are going to be times (note: I didn’t say “might!”) when you just can’t stick to your plans to the letter for the day. When that’s the case, choose the steps that are feasible, more important, or will make you feel better about yourself. The small wins can make a big difference.
As you make small life changes that will bring monumental results,I again remind you not to lose sight of the big picture. It’s that important! Put reminders that will resonate with you everywhere. It could be a sticky note with motivational sayings on your refrigerator or hanging a pair of jeans, in the size you want to wear when you’ve reached your goal weight, on your closet door. If you’re a Weight Watchers member, don’t tuck those awards away. Keep them out in the open. Without reminders, you can easily find yourself going through the steps and forgetting why or worse yet, quit going through the steps completely. Always focus on the “whys: and constantly re-evalulate your behaviors so you can keep everything in perspective. Savor each win!
Getting to a healthier weight and becoming the person you want to be is one of the greatest adventures you’ll undertake in life. Dive in!
