An Easy Transition to Maintaining Your Exercise Routine During the Fall

walking through the autumn leavesFall is one of my favorite times of year. There is something beautiful in it for all of us.  It’s a season to renew, refresh and refocus on all the things that matter the most.

For me, I like to think of October as “the new year.”  It’s a time for me to gear up for the cooler temperatures, the holiday season and everything that comes along with the upcoming months.

It’s also a time to enjoy the beautiful fall foliage, the crisp air AND exercising outdoors, while taking in everything our environment has to offer.

With kids back to school, busy work schedules underway, and the holiday season right around the corner, it can be a challenge to find time to exercise, especially when there’s not as much daylight.  But as the winter season approaches, fall is a great time to increase your physically activity.  Getting started now can help you generate enough momentum to make it through the holiday seasons without gaining weight.

Why not go walking, cycling, or jog the local park trails, which can be done right in your own neighborhood.  Raking leaves or doing some fall outdoor yardwork is a great way to get the heart pumping, and burn calories too.

Personally, I enjoy walking year-round, but I especially love to walk during the fall as I take in the beautiful scenery.

Here are a few tips that will help you enjoy the season, as you exercise you way right through it.

  • Walk:  Walking is one of the best ways to exercise during the fall season, when temperatures are cooler.  All you need is a good pair of walking shoes and a lot of dedication.  Trying walking every day after dinner, or wake up early and take a 10 minute brisk walk around your neighborhood as you prepare for the day.
  • Running:  Fall is probably the best time of year for running outdoors. It’s not too hot, not too cold and watching the leaves change colors each time you head outside can make each workout a new adventure.
  • Yardwork:  Fall yardwork can be a good way to exercise. Why not take your exercise routine outside and spruce up your yard at the same time?  Burn calories as you put those muscle to work and prepare your outdoor space for the season.
  • Home Fitness:  Home fitness is another other option if you’re not crazy about the gym and fall is a great time to get your home gym in working order.  Try exercise videos and home fitness exercise that are inexpensive and simple to use.
